Cookie Policy

Last updated: March 2026

1. Introduction

This Cookie Policy explains how MatatuOS Ltd ("MatatuOS", "we", "our", or "us") uses cookies and similar tracking technologies when you visit our website at matatuos.com or use our web application. This policy is intended to be read alongside our Privacy Policy, which explains more broadly how we collect and process personal data.

By continuing to use our website or platform after being shown our cookie notice, you consent to our use of cookies as described in this policy. You can withdraw consent at any time by adjusting your browser settings or using the controls described in Section 5 of this policy.

2. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, tablet, or mobile phone) by a website when you visit it. They are widely used to make websites work correctly, improve performance, and provide information to the site owner. Cookies allow a website to recognise your device on subsequent visits and remember preferences or actions you have taken.

In addition to traditional cookies, we also use related technologies:

  • Local Storage and Session Storage: Browser-based storage mechanisms that hold data locally on your device, used for persisting your session state and UI preferences within the MatatuOS application.
  • Pixels and web beacons: Tiny invisible images embedded in pages or emails that tell us whether a page was loaded or an email was opened.
  • Device fingerprinting: We may collect non-identifying device signals (browser version, screen resolution, timezone) for security purposes such as detecting unusual login activity.

3. Types of Cookies We Use

3.1 Essential Cookies

Always active — cannot be disabled

These cookies are strictly necessary for the MatatuOS platform to function. Without them, core services such as logging in, navigating between pages, and processing transactions cannot be provided. They do not collect any information that could be used for marketing.

3.2 Analytics Cookies

Enabled by default — can be disabled

Analytics cookies help us understand how users interact with MatatuOS so we can improve the product. They collect information in an aggregated, pseudonymous form — meaning we see patterns across many users, not individual profiles. We use this data to identify which features are most used, where users encounter friction, and how performance can be improved.

We use a self-hosted analytics solution (not Google Analytics) which means your data remains within systems we control and is not shared with advertising networks.

Cookie NamePurposeDuration
_mtos_uidAssigns an anonymous visitor ID for session tracking1 year
_mtos_sessTracks page views and navigation paths within a session30 minutes
_mtos_refRecords the source from which a user arrived (e.g., search, referral)7 days

3.3 Functional Cookies

Enabled by default — can be disabled

Functional cookies enable enhanced features that go beyond core platform operation. Disabling these cookies will not prevent you from using MatatuOS, but you may lose access to personalisation features or have a slightly degraded experience.

matos_dashSaves your dashboard layout and widget arrangement6 months
matos_notifStores your in-app notification preferences6 months

3.4 What We Do Not Use

MatatuOS does not use advertising or targeting cookies. We do not partner with advertising networks, run retargeting campaigns, or sell your browsing data to any third party. We do not embed Facebook Pixel, Google Ads tags, or any similar third-party advertising trackers on our platform.

4. Third-Party Cookies

In limited cases, third-party services embedded in the MatatuOS platform may set their own cookies. These third parties operate under their own privacy and cookie policies, which we encourage you to review:

  • Mapbox / OpenStreetMap: Our GPS fleet tracking maps are powered by mapping providers that may set cookies to render map tiles and track map interactions. These cookies do not identify you personally to the mapping provider.
  • Safaricom M-PESA (Daraja): The M-PESA payment flow may redirect through Safaricom infrastructure. Safaricom's own privacy policy governs any data collected during that redirect.
  • Intercom / support chat widget: If you engage with our in-app support chat, the support tool provider may set cookies to maintain your chat session and support history.

We periodically audit third-party integrations to minimise the cookies they place on your device and ensure they align with our privacy commitments.

5. How to Control Cookies

You have several options to manage or disable cookies:

5.1 Cookie Consent Banner

When you first visit matatuos.com, a cookie consent banner allows you to accept all cookies or customise your preferences by category. You can revisit these preferences at any time by clicking the "Cookie Settings" link in the footer of any page.

5.2 Browser Settings

Most browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. Here is how to access cookie settings in common browsers:

  • Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Safari (macOS / iOS): Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Mozilla Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Microsoft Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Cookies and site data

Blocking all cookies will prevent you from logging in to MatatuOS and using core platform features, as session and authentication cookies are essential for the service to function.

5.3 Opt-Out of Analytics

You can opt out of our analytics cookies at any time via your account settings under Profile → Privacy Preferences → Analytics. When opted out, your activity will not contribute to usage analytics reports, though essential cookies will continue to be used.

6. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy as our use of cookies changes or as legal requirements evolve. When we make significant changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, display a renewed cookie consent notice. We recommend reviewing this policy periodically. Continued use of MatatuOS after changes are published constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
